The New York Public Library will stream a rarely seen 1974 interview with Liza Minnelli, John Kander, and Fred Ebb March 11 at 5:30 PM ET. The event is free with prior registration.
Never before seen outside the library walls, the interview captures the frequent collaborators talking about their creative process, their time working on Flora, the Red Menace, and more. The interview was originally produced by the library's Theatre on Film and Tape and recorded at the Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center.
The trio's work together began with Flora, the Red Menace in 1965, a short-lived musical with a score by Kander and Ebb that also gave Minnelli her Broadway debut at age 19. The group would go on to work together on the film adaptation of Kander and Ebb's Cabaret, Minnelli's 1972 TV concert Liza With a Z, Chicago (Minnelli filled in for an ailing Gwen Verdon for a month in 1975), The Act, and The Rink. Minnelli has remained one of the writing teams preeminent interpreters throughout her long career.
The 1974 interview catches them at the peak of their work together, having recently completed Cabaret and Liza With a Z, and months away from Minnelli's surprise star turn in Chicago on Broadway.
