The Little Big Things, currently an Olivier nominee for Best New Musical, will stream via National Theatre At Home beginning May 9. The production was filmed during its world premiere 2023 run at London's @sohoplace, directed by Luke Sheppard (& Juliet). Watch highlights from the production above.
The work uses a pop score (by Nick Butcher and Tom Ling) to breathe life into the story of Henry Fraser, an athlete who turned to visual art after becoming paralyzed from the shoulders down in an accident. Fraser's paintings, which he creates using a mouth stick attached to a paintbrush, stylus, or other art-making apparatus, have received major international attention in the decade since his accident. Butcher wrote the music and co-wrote the lyrics with Ling, with Joe White penning the book from Fraser's best-selling memoir.
"We’re thrilled to extend the reach of The Little Big Things through the National Theatre at Home streaming platform," says Sheppard in a statement. "Accessibility lies at the center of this production, and now through this release, a whole new audience can access and experience the power of Henry Fraser's remarkable story."
The cast is led by Ed Larkin and Jonny Amies as Man and Boy Henry Fraser, respectively. They are joined by Linzi Hateley as Fran Fraser, Alasdair Harvey as Andrew Fraser, Jordan Benjamin as Dom, Rebecca Bowden as Surgeon, Jamie Chatterton as Tom, Tom Oliver as Marco, Malinda Parris as Dr. Graham, Cleve September as Will, and Amy Trigg as Agnes, with Stephen John Davis, Elena Pitsiaeli, George Salmon, Amy West, and Joseph Wolff filling out the company.
The creative team includes set designer Colin Richmond, choreographer Mark Smith, costume designer Fay Fullerton, video designer Luke Halls, lighting designer Howard Hudson, sound designer Paul Gatehouse, musical supervisor Matthew Brind, music director Laura Bangay, dramaturg Nickie Miles-Wildin, and casting director Jill Green.
NT At Home mostly offers filmed stage productions from the theatre's NTLive series along with archival tapings of National Theatre productions. The Little Big Things is neither, with the stage run having been produced by Michael Harrison. Titles in the NT At Home collection can be rented individually, with streaming subscriptions also available.
NTLive, which primarily broadcasts productions live to movie theatres worldwide, kicked off its 2024 season with Dear England January 25, Vanya February 22, and The Motive and the Cue March 21. Nye will hit movie theatres beginning April 23. NT At Home does not have the complete NTLive collection, though many titles find their way to the streamer following the movie theatre run.
