Tony nominee and Emmy winner Colman Domingo leads the upcoming Netflix film Rustin as the title character Bayard Rustin, the gay civil rights activist who organized the 1963 March on Washington. See his rousing portrayal in the film's trailer above.
Rustin has a screenplay and is directed by five-time Tony winner George C. Wolfe and is the first feature film to come from the partnership between Netflix and President Barack and Michele Obama's Higher Ground.
The cast also includes Chris Rock, Glynn Turman, Aml Ameen, Michael Potts, and Tony winners Jeffrey Wright, Adrienne Warren, Bill Irwin, and Audra McDonald.
Domingo is a Tony and Olivier nominee for his role in the 2011 musical The Scottsboro Boys. He won a 2022 Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his guest spot on the HBO Max series Euphoria. He will next be seen on screen as Mister in the film adaptation of the musical The Color Purple.
Fun Fact: In addition to his career as a political leader, Bayard Rustin was also an accomplished vocalist. As a young man, he even appeared on Broadway in the ensemble of the short-lived 1940 musical John Henry, which starred Paul Robeson as the title character.
Rustin will release in select theatres November 3, followed by a November 17 streaming release on Netflix.
