Just in time for National Hispanic Heritage Month, Red Bull Theater will present its fourth installment of its Hispanic Golden Age Classics series. This year features readings of Don Quixote in English and Spanish, which will kick off the Off-Broadway institution's 2023-2024 season.
Red Bull Theater, founded by artistic director Jesse Berger in 2003, will present the English translation world-premiere of Guillén de Castro's Don Quixote play, based on Miguel de Cervantes’ novel about a windmill-tilting knight and his loyal sidekick. The company's Revelation Reading of de Castro's Spanish classic will be presented live at Repertorio Español October 3, as well as available for streaming until October 8.
Then on October 10, Repertorio Español will present Don Quixote in Spanish with English supertitles.
Working in collaboration with Repertorio Español and Diversifying the Classics | UCLA, Red Bull Theater's Hispanic Golden Age Classics series aims to promote awareness and foster appreciation of Hispanic classical theatre and the rich tradition of commedia through lesser-known texts that stand the test of time.
"All of us at Red Bull are excited to announce the programs for our upcoming Hispanic Golden Age Classics program, as part of our ongoing mission to revitalize the classics for today's audiences," said Berger in a statement. "In addition to being able to share the work globally via livestream, this is our first time being able to do this program live and in person, which will be wonderful!"
"This brand new translation of the play —for the first time in English— is terrific, and we can't wait to share it with audiences far and wide," adds Red Bull Theater's executive director Martin Giannini in a statement. "We hope this endeavor uncovers a whole new angle on the Don Quixote story and provides a point of entry into the broader classical canon of plays produced in theatres throughout our country and beyond."
The English-language version Don Quixote will be presented live at Repertorio Español this evening at 7:30 PM ET, followed by a Live & Online Bull Session—a free interactive discussion of the play and its themes with members of the creative teams—at approximately 9:30 PM ET.
The presentation, directed by José Zayas, will feature Keith Hamilton Cobb, Darryl Gene Daughtry, Carson Elrod, Zachary Fine, Carol Halstead, Irene Sofia Lucio, Melissa Mahoney, Ismenia Mendes, Jacob Ming-Trent, Luis Moreno, and Arturo Luis Soria.
A recording of the English-translation reading will be available from October 3 at 7:30 PM ET through October 8 at 11:59 PM ET. Open captions will be available beginning October 4 at 7:30 PM ET.
Red Bull Theater will also present a reading of de Castro's original Don Quixote in Spanish, directed by Leyma López, in-person only at Repertorio Español, October 10 at 7:30 PM.
