Nick Blaemire and Van Hughes' new musical Space Dogs will be released for streaming exclusively on BroadwayHD beginning October 13. Telling a so-absurd-it-must-be-true story, Space Dogs follows the dogs trained by Russian scientists to travel into outer space.
“Space Dogs was conceived and developed with a live capture in mind, so we've been delighted with BroadwayHD's amazing work on this show,” said MCC Theater Co-Artistic Director Will Cantler. “Even if you saw it in the theatre, you will want to check out this gorgeous film!”
Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley, co-founders of BroadwayHD said, “Space Dogs is an incredible live capture that launches viewers on an unforgettable journey through space. We’re thrilled to celebrate its exclusive worldwide premiere with our subscribers."
Final performances of the show's Off-Broadway run at MCC Theater earlier this year, starring Blaemire and Hughes, were filmed for the streaming release. Hughes and Blaemire add to their performances of human characters using an assortment of puppets, stuffed animals, and instruments to tell the story.
Ellie Heyman directed the Off-Broadway production which features scenic design by Wilson Chin, costume design by Haydee Zelideth Atuñano, lighting design by Mary Ellen Stebbins, sound design by Nathan Leigh, projection design by Stefania Bulbarella and Alex Basco Koch, puppet and props design by Amanda Villalobos, choreography by Darrell Grand Moultrie, and production stage management by Katherine Wallace. Noah Kieserman is the production's understudy and casting is by The Telsey Office's Geoff Josselson.
Space Dogs also released an original cast album with executive producer Kurt Deutsch. It is now available through Ghostlight Records.
