Broadway News Between Riverside and Crazy Cancels Performances January 4-5, Welcomes Maria-Christina Oliveras to the Company

Oliveras steps in as Liza Colón-Zayas departs the Broadway production of Stephen Adly Guirgis' Pulitzer-winning play.

Second Stage Theater's Broadway debut of Stephen Adly Guirgis’ Pulitzer-winning Between Riverside and Crazy has cancelled performances January 4 and 5 due to an exposure of COVID-19. The company announced the news on InstagramAustin Pendleton directs the Pulitzer-winning play's Broadway production which opened December 19 at the Hayes Theater. Read reviews here.

The cancellation comes as we also learn that Maria-Christina Oliveras (AmelieMachinal) will succeed Liza Colón-Zayas as Church Lady when performances resume, which is expected for January 6

The show began previews November 30, and the run will continue through February 12. Performances January 31–February 12 will also be available to stream live.

Stephen McKinley Henderson, Victor Almanzar, and Common in Between Riverside and Crazy Joan Marcus

Oliveras joins Stephen McKinley Henderson as Pops, Oscar, Emmy, and Grammy winner Common as Junior, Victor Almanzar as Oswaldo, Elizabeth Canavan as Detective O'Connor, Rosal Colón as Lulu, and Michael Rispoli as Lieutenant Caro; Common, Almanzar, Canavan, Colón-Zayas, and Rispoli all make their Broadway debuts with the production.

A look at life in rent-controlled New York City, Guirgis' play follows recently widowed ex-cop Walter "Pops" Washington and his recently paroled son Junior as they try to hold onto their rent-stabilized apartment.

Rounding out the company as understudies are Erick Betancourt, J. Anthony Crane, Clinton Lowe, Kate A. Mulligan, C.E. Smith, and Vivana Valeria.

Pendleton, who also directed the cast Off-Broadway, returns with his original creative team: scenic designer Walt Spangler, costume designer Alexis Forte, lighting designer Keith Parham, and sound designer Ryan Rumery, who also provides original music. Casting is by William Cantler and Karyn Casl of The Telsey Office, with John C. Moore serving as production stage manager and Bryan Bauer as stage manager.

Between Riverside and Crazy made its Off-Broadway debut in 2014 at Atlantic Theater, where it had a sold-out run. Second Stage revived the show with much of the same cast and creative team at its Tony Kiser Theater Off-Broadway in February 2015.
