Spanish theatre Teatro del Soho CaixaBank will join forces with Estudio Caribe to present a new revival of Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tebelak's Godspell next season. The production will be directed by Emilio Aragón.
The production will follow earlier productions of A Chorus Line and Company, both of which starred and were helmed by Teatro del Soho Artistic director and founder Antonio Banderas. Banderas' involvement will be with this upcoming production of Godspell is unspecified beyond his work leading the Málaga company.
Originally premiering Off-Broadway in 1971 (following a 1970 student production at Carnegie Mellon University) and on Broadway in 1976, Godspell re-tells The Gospel According to St. Matthew as a series of skits and songs, with Jesus and his disciples presented as loving clowns. Schwartz's score includes such songs as "Day by Day," "Turn Back, O Man," "Save the People," and more.
In the years since its premiere, Godspell has become a mainstay of community theatres, schools, churches, and regional theatres. The work was revived Off-Broadway in 1988 and 2000, and came back to the Main Stem in 2011 in a production starring Hunter Parrish, Uzo Aduba, Telly Leung, George Salazar, Lindsay Mendez, and more.
The work premiered in Spain in 1974, in a production starring Juan Ribó.
Teatro del Soho CaixaBank's Company continues in Málaga through April 3, with a Barcelona transfer set to follow. Their A Chorus Line is currently touring Spain, with a run at Madrid's Teatro Calderón continuing through April 17 and a Barcelona stop set to follow beginning April 23. The latter released a cast recording earlier this month.
