The Rainbow Tour is coming around again! Jamie Lloyd's revival of Evita has set a return engagement, this time at The London Palladium June 14-September 6, 2025. Opening night will be June 27. Casting is to be announced.
Lloyd is currently represented on Broadway with Sunset Boulevard. The Evita creative team is also to be announced, indicating this new run may see changes from the production's earlier stagings. The revival premiered at Regent's Park Open Air Theatre in 2019, and played a run at the Barbican Theatre the following year.
The 2019 staging at Regent's Park starred Samantha Pauly (currently on Broadway in The Great Gatsby) as Eva Peron, though casting has not been announced for this 2025 engagement.
“After an unforgettable experience on Sunset Blvd., we are excited to continue our collaboration with Andrew Lloyd Webber, and to take another look at Tim and Andrew’s musical masterpiece Evita," says Lloyd in a statement. "It is a great privilege to do so at the incredible London Palladium alongside [producer] Michael Harrison.”
Harrison is producing for Lloyd Webber Harrison Musicals, alongside Lloyd's Jamie Lloyd Company.
“It’s an honor to return to The London Palladium next summer, with my 14th production at the theatre," adds Harrison. "I’m even more delighted, alongside The Jamie Lloyd Company, to be presenting Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s glorious musical, Evita, and to be collaborating again with Jamie following Sunset Blvd.”
Evita, which premiered as a 1976 two-LP recording starring Julie Covington (Eva) and Colm Wilkinson (Che), features a score by Lloyd Webber (music) and Rice (lyrics). Hal Prince staged both the original London and New York productions of the musical, which made stars of Elaine Paige (in London) and Mandy Patinkin and Patti LuPone (on Broadway). The score features such tunes as “Don't Cry for Me Argentina,” “Buenos Aires,” “A New Argentina,” “Another Suitcase in Another Hall,” “I'd Be Surprisingly Good for You,” and “Rainbow High.” Madonna, Antonio Banderas, and Jonathan Pryce starred in the film version. The Broadway revival co-starred Elena Roger, Ricky Martin, and Michael Cerveris.
Lloyd's staging of the musical is one of two competing revivals currently circling the waters, along with a Broadway-aimed staging from American director Sammi Cannold that played runs at New York City Center in 2019, and American Repertory Theatre and Shakespeare Theatre Company in 2023.
