Throughout the evening, companies from the Best Musical and Best Revival of a Musical nominees performed, including The Music Man, MJ, Mr. Saturday Night, Company, Girl from the North Country, A Strange Loop, Paradise Square, and SIX: The Musical.
Billy Crystal made his Yiddish scat singing number "Stick Around" interactive with the audience in his performance for Mr. Saturday Night.
The company of Company performed "Company." The nine time-nominated show brought home five awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, making it the show to win the most awards this season.
The company of Girl from the North Country performed "Like a Rolling Stone / Pressing On." Simon Hale took home the show's sole Tony win for Best Orchestrations.
Winner of two awards, the cast of 11 time-nominated A Strange Loop performed "Intermission Song / Today." The show's creator Michael R. Jackson took home the award for Best Book of a Musical.
Paradise Square, which earned 10 Tony nominations, performed "Paradise Square / Let It Burn" featuring Joaquina Kalukango, who shortly thereafter won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her performance.
The Tudor queens of SIX: The Musical, which took home two awards from the eight categories for which it received nominations, performed "Ex-Wives / Six" as the ceremony's final performance from a nominated show of the evening. Creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss took home Best Original Score, with Marlow making Tony history.
The evening also included some somber moments, like this touching tribute to late theatrical trailblazer Stephen Sondheim from frequent Sondheim interpreter Bernadette Peters. The three-time Tony honoree re-created her performance from the original cast of Into the Woods with "Children Will Listen."
The evening's In Memoriam segment featured Kinky Boots Tony winner Billy Porter singing My Fair Lady's "On the Street Where You Live."
Also featured at this year's awards was a reunion of original Broadway cast members from Spring Awakening, including Jonathan Groff, Lea Michele, John Gallagher, Jr., and more. Check out the performance here.
