Tony Awards Telecast Performance Mishaps, Jonathan Groff Playing Piano: Go Behind the Scenes at the Tony Awards

Playbill gave disposable cameras to 10 members from nominated shows to capture all the magic of the 2024 Tony Awards.

Eddie Redmayne, Gayle Rankin, Shaina Taub, Daniel Radcliffe, and Leana Rae Concepcion

At the 77th Annual Tony Awards, Playbill entrusted disposable cameras to cast members from CabaretHell’s KitchenIllinoiseMerrily We Roll AlongThe OutsidersStereophonicSuffsWater for Elephants, and The Who's Tommy. Each of them captured a photo album full of Broadway magic, and plenty of moments that you wouldn’t find on the broadcast.

Follow these Broadway stars during their busy Tony day, which included Tony Awards dress rehearsals, performing an afternoon matinee, changing into their Tonys outfit, changing back into their costumes if they're performing during the telecast, and then changing (again) into their party outfits.

Check out each of their photo galleries below, plus reflections on the awards from newly minted Tony winner Will Brill, Jocelyn Bioh, Hannah Cruz, Isabelle McCalla, and more.

POV: you're Jackie Leon on Tony night Jackie Leon

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Jackie Leon: The day was conquered through laughter. On the bus, in the dressing room, at the after party there wasn't a moment I didn't find myself cackling alongside my HK family.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
Kecia Lewis and Maleah Joi Moon both respectively winning their Tony awards. The screams of pride and jubilation shook the ground beneath our feet.

Any surprising star sightings?
Alicia Keys is our fearless leader and also knows how to throw a party! Tierra Wack performed live at our after party, Jeremy Pope came through and Alicia herself was (of course) in attendance.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
I was sitting comfortably on our Lincoln Center bound bus with not a care in the world and eager for us to depart when my dear friend Vanessa Ferguson (who plays Tiny) came up to me and presented me with my Tonys Mic that I 100 percent forgot at my station. I was gagged.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Heineken! If there's one thing about me, regardless of the function, imma order a beer.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?
"Nights Like This They Belong In The Guinness"

“Bleibe, Reste, SLAYYY!” (Photos by Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club's Marty Lauter aka Marcia, Marcia, Marcia)

POV: you're Marty Lauter on Tony night Marty Lauter

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Marty Lauter:
Thankfully, we didn’t have a matinee, so we all got to go home and rest before the show. We were all buzzing at the dress rehearsal so we definitely tuckered ourselves out.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
There was a moment where all of our Sallys (Gayle Rankin, Gabi Campo, Paige Smallwood, and Ayla Ciccone-Burton) got together for a picture, and all shouted “Hello, darling!” together and it made me cry. It reminded me of how far we’ve come, and how much of a family we truly are.

Any surprising star sightings?
Elle Fanning was standing right by our entrance spot! She’s so tall and even more beautiful in person.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
Thankfully no! Our show can be a bit chaotic on any given day, so it takes a lot to throw us off.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Considering we had a Monday night show…ginger ale hehe.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

Great American B****es take the Tonties (Photos by Suffs's Hannah Cruz)

Shaina Taub Hannah Cruz

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Hannah Cruz: We (my fiancé and I) got a hotel room close by so between Tony dress rehearsal and our matinee, I laid down. And between our matinee and the broadcast, I took a nice nap. Made the whole day a lot easier.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
Seeing Shaina [Taub] directly after her Best Score win was a moment I will never ever forget. Seeing her build and mold this show over the years I’ve known her and to then see her reap the rewards of that work is the most inspiring thing I’ve ever seen.

Any surprising star sightings?
I was so happy to run into Sarah Pidgeon [of Stereophonic] backstage. So kind, so talented and so beautiful. An angel.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
My phone flew out of my purse while I was on a Citibike in Times Square on my way to the matinee. Thankfully nothing broke but that spiked my blood pressure.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Water, no ice baby! I was insanely thirsty after the day we had.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

The Tonys Don’t Make You Young 🤣 (Photos by Water for Elephants's Isabelle McCalla)

POV: you're Isabelle McCalla on Tony night Isabelle McCalla

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Isabelle McCalla:
My community and adrenaline helped me get through. Having a newly sprained ankle made it sometimes difficult to maneuver, but at each step, I felt so supported. By our amazing wardrobe team, who found me pants and flats to accommodate my air cast, my stylist for finding sparkle sneakers to match my dress for the red carpet, [Elephants book writer] Rick Elice for proudly introducing me to members of the industry who he has known forever, and every member in my company who gave me nothing but love. The attitude always was “we can make it work.” I’m so grateful.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
At our company party for Water for Elephants, they debuted a Pride Electronic Dance Remix of “Easy” (one of my songs from the show) and we all went NUTS! Antoine Boissereau, who plays Silver Star, and I ended up in the center of the dance floor, and just had a BALL experiencing this song for the first time. The excitement I felt gave me a little extra pep in my step, despite my sprained ankle! I’ll never forget that moment.

Any surprising star sightings?
Alicia Keys hugged me in the elevator. She could not have been more warm and I did squeal a little when she got off. I saw her in concert a year ago for my birthday, so to have this moment was so special.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
Well honestly, our whole Tony performance was a near catastrophe. Something went VERY WRONG with the sound, and we couldn’t hear anything. Thankfully, Grant Gustin, Stan Brown, and Wade McCollum were able to somehow find where we were in the music which grounded us all. But circus is very dangerous if you can’t hear the music, because everyone needs to be in perfect sync for a trick to be completed successfully. Not to be dramatic, but it was a very scary 3.5 minutes for our company. But I’m so proud of us because we RALLIED despite our setbacks. And that’s what circus is all about. Coming together as one company to make the best of a shitty situation. And luckily you couldn’t really tell all that much on the telecast.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Tequila Soda with lime always.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

Tonight, We Are Young! (Photos by Jaja’s African Hair Braiding's Jocelyn Bioh)

POV: you're Jocelyn Bioh on Tony night Jocelyn Bioh

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Jocelyn Bioh: My husband Austin Smith. There is no one else I’d rather spend such an insane day with.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
It was thrilling to see Dede Ayite make history with her TONY win. Also, my dear friend Branden Jacobs-Jenkins winning [Best Revival of a Play] for Appropriate. And I loved being at the Ghostlight party where we all cheered and clapped for Kara Young as she entered the party. It was so magical and celebratory.

Any surprising star sightings?
I walked by Angelina Jolie when coming from the bathroom. I nearly fainted, ha. She’s so stunning.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
I took my shoes off at the end of the night so there wouldn’t be any catastrophes. I’m clumsy and known to trip over anything.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Champagne. Always and forever.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?
"Tonight, we are young!" Or, "Shine Bright like a Diamond."

Illinoise finally got to meet Tony!! (Photos by Illinoise's Elijah Lyons)

POV: you're Elijah Lyons on Tony night Elijah Lyons

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Elijah Lyons:
I would say that tiny naps got me through the day! I was a bit nervous here and there, so some meditation and mini-naps went a long way to keep me sane!

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
My favorite memory of the day was the applause after our performance! The crowd was full of people that I’ve looked up to for a long time, so to see them all stand and cheer for us made me feel like we were on top of the world!

Any surprising star sightings?
My favorite star sighting was spotting Cynthia Erivo in the front row as I was leaving the stage. I waved to her and she waved back!

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
Well actually, we had a very brief sound issue at the beginning of our performance. I could barely hear the music that I was singing to for the first 10-ish seconds! I did my best to keep my composure but for a few seconds, I was flying blind and thought that I was going to go the entire performance struggling to find the tempo of the music…However, the issue was quickly resolved, the rest of the performance went smoothly, and upon watching the video, I couldn’t even tell anything went wrong!

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
My go-to drink at the bar was a margarita!

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

This Is What Dreams Are Made Of (Photos by The Outsiders's Emma Pittman)

POV: you're Emma Pittman on Tony night Emma Pittman

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Emma Pittman:
Taking deep breaths, and a little nap :)

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
It would have to be sitting downstairs with the company in the crossover at the theatre, crowded around the tv, waiting to hear them announce Best Musical. The silence that filled the room could’ve been cut with a knife. Then the ERUPTION that followed the announcement that we won, was truly unforgettable.

Any surprising star sightings?
As we were exiting the theatre from the rehearsal in the morning, I got to wave at Audra McDonald. Then as we exited the stage after the performance in the evening, Nicole Scherzinger was doing a mic check and I got to say hello! VERY cool

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
The best surprise was that my best friend Kolten Bell (who was volunteering for the Jimmy Awards’s that day) not only got to see the dress rehearsal in the morning but also got to attend the ACTUAL EVENT! It was so special to know I had a dear friend in the house as we performed.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Water!!! It was a long day, and I knew that too much alcohol would make me want to hit the sack. I wanted to take it all in for as long as my feet could hold me up!

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

The Who! The Who! The Who’s Tommy! (Photos by The Who's Tommy's Alexandra Matteo)

POV: you're Alexandra Matteo on Tony night Alexandra Matteo

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Alexandra Matteo:
I was thinking it would be adrenaline, but on my break before the matinee, my best friend Bligh went to the farmer’s market to get me a loaf of bread the size of a small child from SheWolf bakery while I slept in her bed for a couple of hours...that bread kept me going ALL DAY. She also made me homemade pesto. So yeah….probably carbs?

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
Oh God….I don’t know if I can pick just one…I guess getting to perform with this specific group of humans on the Tony Awards. Most of us have been with this show since Chicago. We had a lot of debuts, but for nearly all of us (even those of us for whom Tommy is not our debut) this was the first time performing on the Tonys. I think of everyone you saw up there (including the principals) only six people had performed on them before. It was an incredibly special moment to experience as a family.

Any surprising star sightings?
I was stretching my calves on the stairs outside Lincoln Center and Daniel Radcliffe and Jonathan Groff came over and shot the shit with me for a bit…so that was fun.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
I mean…I think we were all relieved Pete didn’t get hit by a skateboard.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Bourbon on the rocks.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?

Look At These Nobodies (Photos by Stereophonic's Will Brill)

POV: you're Will Brill on Tony night Will Brill

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Will Brill: My girlfriend, Talene Monahon. My reps, Elizabeth Wiederseim, Vikram Dhawer, and Scott Braun. Coffee. Cheez-Its, M&Ms, a PB&J, Gatorade, a milkshake, sliders, potatoes au gratin, and adrenaline.

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
Hearing my name called [when I won the Tony Award] feels like a thing I dreamed. I don’t know that I have an actual recollection of it but it was cool. Does that count?

Any surprising star sightings?
I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again: Gayle Rankin.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
I didn’t bring enough snacks for everyone.

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
Water! Hydrate or Die-drate!

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012 - a song lyric, a pun, etc)

Old Friends (Photos by Merry We Roll Along's Leana Rae Concepcion)

POV: you're Leana Rae Concepcion on Tony night Leana Rae Concepcion

Sunday was a really long day. What helped you get through it?
Leana Rae Concepcion:
The excitement of it all! From dress rehearsal to getting home post all of the after parties, I was up for 24 hours straight...and it was the greatest 24 hours of my life!!

What was your top favorite memory from that day?
Oh god, it's going to be impossible to choose because so many amazing things happened. But, I think my favorite moment was at The Carlyle. Erin, Sandy, Dan and I were all illegally sitting on top of a banquet watching Jonathan sing "Old Friends" next to this gorgeous grand piano and then all of a sudden, "New York, New York" started playing. We then continued to scream-sing along at the top of our lungs. It was a glorious moment. I never want to forget the joy I saw in their eyes, especially Dan. God, I love those people.

Any surprising star sightings?
Kara Young. She's the real deal. And not only is she incredibly talented, but so wonderfully kind.

Did you have any near catastrophes or surprises?
It's no surprise to anyone who knows me, but I couldn't stop crying at Lincoln Center. Minutes before we were supposed to start performing, I burst into tears and Jamila grabbed my hand and said "Not yet, girl! Not yet!" Then we ran on stage, did our transition, and when I got backstage, I immediately ran up to the monitor to watch the trio perform. They were perfect. It was perfect. And I was sobbing quietly to myself overwhelmed with pride and joy!

What was your go-to drink at the afterparty?
God, I love a cosmo.

Lastly, what would you name this photo album (think Facebook 2012—a song lyric, a pun, etc)?
It's totally a cop out but I have to go with: "Old Friends" or "Here's to Us. Who's like us? Damn Few!" It's just too perfect!
