Video: Kara Young Isn't Anywhere Close to Done, Even After Her Purlie Victorious Triple Crown

Kara Young won the 2024 Tony Award for Featured Actress in a Play for her work as Lutiebelle Gussie Mae Jenkins in the Broadway revival of Ossie Davis’ Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch.

This is Young’s first Tony win after three consecutive years of being nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Play—making her the first Black woman to be nominated three years in a row. The award also marked the completion of Young's triple crown this season, winning each major New York theatre award for her performance (earlier this season, she received the Outer Critics Circle award and the Drama Desk award). She was previously Tony nominated for her work on Broadway in Martina Majok’s Cost of Living and Lynn Nottage’s Clyde’s.

Backstage after her win, Young had the following to share with Playbill; "To celebrate myself is something that's very challenging for me to do. You know, I've been going from one thing to the next to the next to the next, and I am just grateful to have been acknowledged this time, and I feel like every nomination has been an acknowledgement, but this really feels special."

While Young is currently enjoying a well deserved breather, she's hardly stepping away. "The reward to me is to get to do this. To get to be a storyteller. There's so many stories yet to be told, and I can't wait to honor another Black woman, Black femme, Black non-binary person, I can't wait to be of service and step into their world."
