Broadway News Director Sam Gold Steps in for Michael Patrick Thornton in April 14 Performance of Broadway's Macbeth

The show resumed previews earlier this week after cancelling performances due to a number of COVID cases within the company.

Director Sam Gold stepped onto the Longacre Theatre stage for the April 14 performance of Broadway's Macbeth after actor Michael Patrick Thornton tested positive for COVID. 

Thornton tested positive April 14, and with all available understudies already filling other roles, Gold played Lennox for the sold-out performance, a production spokesperson confirmed.

The show resumed previews April 12 after cancelling its April 1-11 performances as a number of company members tested positive for COVID, including star Daniel Craig, who has returned to the production.

The cast also features Ruth Negga as the unrelenting Lady Macbeth, Tony nominees Maria Dizzia and Amber Gray, Phillip James Brannon, Grantham Coleman, Asia Kate Dillon, Emeka Guindo, Paul Lazar, Bobbi MacKenzie, Michael Patrick Thornton, and Danny Wolohan. The ensemble includes Che Ayende, Eboni Flowers, and Peter Smith. Stevie Ray Dallimore serves as standby for the title role.

Within the cast, Negga, Dillon, Guindo, Lazar, Smith, and Thornton are all making Broadway debuts.

Joining Gold on the creative team are scenic designer Christine Jones, costume designer Suttirat Larlarb, lighting designer Jane Cox, sound designer Mikaal Sulaiman, composer Gaelynn Lea, special effects designer Jeremy Chernick, make-up, hair, and wig designer Tommy Kurzman, and violence director David S. Leong.

Michael Sexton and Ayanna Thompson serve as dramaturgs and text consultants while Dawn-Elin Fraser serves as voice coach. Movement is by Sam Pinkleton, and Kevin Bertolacci is production stage manager. 101 Productions, Ltd. is the general manager and casting is by David Caparelliotis.
