Classic Stage Company is putting the spotlight on the Broadway work of composer Leonard Bernstein with a benefit concert June 9. Titled Classics Up Close: Leonard Bernstein, the evening features songs from On the Town, West Side Story, Wonderful Town, and Candide, in the company's Lynn F. Angelson Theater.
On hand to perform are Kate Baldwin, Nikki Renée Daniels, Santino Fontana, Alysha Umphress, Scarlett Strallen, Tony Yazbeck, and Tabitha Lawing.
Cara Akselrad is directing. Seth Rudetsky is the musical director, and Bernstein's daughter, Jamie Bernstein, will be on hand for the event as well.
“Musical theatre is a classic American genre, and at CSC we love exploring the great composers and lyricists whose work has come to comprise the canon of great musicals,” CSC Producing Artistic Director Jill Rafson said in an earlier statement. “Leonard Bernstein contributed so much to the arts, and we’re excited to put the focus specifically on his creations for Broadway musicals. Getting to hear his gorgeous music as sung by these stunning performers in our intimate space is sure to be an extraordinary experience.”
