The National Theatre's production of The Ocean at the End of the Lane return to London's West End at the Noël Coward Theatre beginning October 11. The seven-week encore run, which follows a U.K. and Ireland tour, will continue through November 25.
Joel Horwood adapted the Neil Gaiman novel, the work's first major stage adaptation. Magic and memory blend in this story about a childhood that was once forgotten. 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the novel's publication.
The full 17-member touring cast continues for the West End run, including Keir Ogilvy as Boy, Daniel Cornish as alternate Boy, Laurie Ogden as Sis, Trevor Fox as Dad, Charlie Brooks as Ursula, Millie Hikasa as Lettie Hempstock, Kemi-Bo Jacobs as Ginnie Hempstock, and Finty Williams as Old Mrs Hempstock. Ensemble members include Paolo Guidi, Ronnie Lee, Aimee McGoldrick, and Domonic Ramsden. Emma-Jane Goodwin, Lewis Howard, Jasmeen James, Joe Rawlinson-Hunt, and Risha Silvera serve as understudies.
Katy Rudd directs the production, which features set design by Fly Davis, costume and puppet design by Samuel Wyer, movement direction by Steven Hoggett, compositions by Jherek Bischoff, lighting design by Paule Constable, sound design by Ian Dickinson, magic and illusions direction and design by Jamie Harrison, and puppetry direction by Finn Caldwell. Casting is by Naomi Downham.
Neil Gaiman is known for his graphic novels such as The Sandman series (which has been adapted for television by Netflix), and his novels including Stardust, Coraline, and The Graveyard Book. His film and television projects also include Good Omens and Anansi Boys.
The Ocean at the End of the Lane received its world premiere at the National Theatre in 2019, and subsequently made its West End debut in 2021 at the Duke of York's Theatre. The show's 39-week U.K. and Ireland tour finished October 7.
