Stephen Sondheim's Aristophanes-inspired farce The Frogs is returning to London next year, with a gleeful star.
Kevin McHale will make his U.K. stage debut as Xanthias in the Southwark Playhouse revival, which is scheduled to run May 23-June 28, 2025. Opening night is set for May 27, 2025. Best known for playing Artie Abrams on the television show Glee, McHale recently starred in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee at Washington, D.C.'s Kennedy Center. Additional casting will be announced at a later date.
Originally adapted by Burt Shevelove, the Southwark production will use the additional adaptive work done by Nathan Lane for the 2004 Broadway revival. Georgie Rankcom will direct.
Set in a divided and despairing political climate, Dionysos and trusty sidekick Xanthias take a leap of faith straight into Hades to find a cure for an ailing world. When they reach the River Styx, they encounter Dionysos’ worst nightmare: frogs.
Rancom will lead a creative team that will include musical director Ben McQuigg, choreographer Matt Nicholson, set and costume designer Libby Todd, lighting designer Samuel Biondolillo, sound designer Joshua Robins, orchestrator Tim Sutton, casting director Peter Noden, production artist Rebecca Pitt, production manager Adam Smith, stage manager Waverley Moran, and assistant stage manager Evie Graham-Brown.
