The Public Theater's Gala on the Green will launch the 60th anniversary season of Free Shakespeare in the Park May 24 at Central Park's Delacorte Theater Lawn. The evening will feature performances by Renée Elise Goldsberry and Oscar Isaac, with Lin-Manuel Miranda also making a special appearance.
Being honored at this year's gala are Gil Shiva of The Susan Stein Shiva Foundation and Jamie Maleszka, director of creative arts at The Fortune Society, who will be presented with the second annual Community Leadership Award.
Goldsberry, Isaac, and Miranda all have history performing at The Public. Goldsberry performed in the Delacorte Theater in Two Gentlemen of Verona as well as in The Public's Hamilton alongside Miranda before its transfer to Broadway. For the theatre's 2017 production of Hamlet, Isaac took on the title role. Further appearances and performances at this year's Gala on the Green will be announced at a later date.
The gala also celebrates the upcoming 60th anniversary of Free Shakespeare in the Park performing in Central Park's open-air Delacorte Theater. The free summer season's first production was The Merchant of Venice starring George C. Scott and James Earl Jones in 1962.
Gala Co-Chairs Mercedes Bass, Jason Blum & Lauren Schuker Blum, and Julio Peterson will host the gala. The Gala Benefit Committee includes Barry Diller & Diane von Fürstenberg, Peter Dinklage & Erica Schmidt, Nora Ephron & Nicholas Pileggi Foundation, Princess Firyal of Jordan, Ryan & Ethan Hawke, Kenneth B. Lerer, Lynn Nesbitt, S.I. Newhouse Foundation, Elizabeth Peabody, Richard Roth, and Liev Schreiber.
The evening is part of a week of performances, social practice demonstrations, classes, and discussions curated by NBT in partnership with The Kennedy Center.
Several members of Prospect Theater Company's 2018 Off-Broadway cast are set to reunite for concert presentations in Washington, D.C. and New York City.
