The West End premiere of Ivo van Hove's adaptation of A Little Life will come to cinemas across the U.K. and selectively across Europe this fall. Based on the novel by Hanya Yanagihara, the English-language stage adaptation will be screened beginning September 28.
The production—currently running at the Harold Pinter Theatre until June 18—will be filmed over four performances after it transfers to the Savoy Theatre July 4. Filming will be held July 6, 8, and 9, and tickets for those performances are the last ones to go on sale as a final opportunity to see the show which has been selling out. for a run through August 5. Starring in the cast are familiar faces James Norton (Grantchester, Belleville) as Jude, Luke Thompson (Bridgerton, King Lear) as Willem, Omari Douglas (Nolly, Cabaret) as JB, and Zach Wyatt (The Witcher: Blood Origin, Bartholomew Fair) as Malcolm. Taking place over the course of three decades, A Little Life follows four friends—a lawyer, an actor, an architect, and an artist—from college to their middle-age lives in New York City. Ambition, addiction, and pride threaten their friendships, but their love for Jude and his mysterious past always keep them together. So what happens when Jude's secrets come to light?
Also starring in the cast are Elliot Cowan (The Crown, 2:22 A Ghost Story) as Brother Luke/Doctor Traylor/Caleb, Zubin Varla (Tammy Faye, Equus) as Harold, Nathalie Armin (Force Majeure, The Doctor) as Ana, and Emilio Doorgasingh (Best of Enemies, The Kite Runner) as Andy.
The book was adapted for the stage by Koen Tachelet, van Hove, and Yanagihara. This production marks the first time the stage version will be performed in English. It first played a preview run at Richmond Theatre March 14-18 before transferring to the Harold Pinter Theatre March 25 where it opened its extended run April 5. Read the reviews here.
Van Hove directs the production which features set, lighting, and video design by Jan Versweyveld, costume design by An D’Huys, music and sound design by Eric Sleichim, casting by Julia Horan, and hair, makeup, and prosthetics design by Susanna Peretz. Versweyveld, D’Huys, and Sleichim are frequent collaborators of van Hove's, and previously worked on the play's previous production in Amsterdam which subsequently played Brooklyn Academy of Music.
The stage production is produced by Wessex Grove, Gavin Kalin Productions, and Playful Productions.
