New York Stage and Film has revealed its 2023 summer season at Marist College, running July 14-August 6. As part of its line-up, a musical adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time featuring a book by Lauren Yee (Cambodian Rock Band) with music and lyrics by Heather Christian (Oratorio for Living Things) will be presented July 21-23.
Adapted from the Madeleine L'Engle novel, A Wrinkle in Time follows Meg Murry on a breakthrough science fantasy adventure. Meg is transported through time and space with her younger brother and friend to rescue her father, a gifted scientist, from the evil forces that hold him prisoner on another planet. Lee Sunday Evans (Dance Nation) will direct the workshop.
Also announced is a workshop for Like They Do in the Movies, a new play written and performed by Laurence Fishburne July 28-29. Leonard Foglia will direct the one-man work described by Fishburne as being about “the stories and lies people have told me. And that I have told myself.”
Paradise Ballroom, a dance musical in development, will be presented August 4-6. Co-created by Princess Lockeroo and Harold O'Neal, Paradise Ballroom will feature a book and lyrics by Princess Lockeroo, who also choreographs, and music by O'Neal. Following rejection by his conservative parents, Paradise Ballroom follows Teddy on his journey from Buffalo, New York to a LGBTQ+ safe-haven in West Los Angeles. As he grows into himself as a dance, Teddy takes a shady offer promising fame and success, and must navigate his way back when he loses his way.
Rounding out the season are a July 14 kick off concert with Joe Iconis & Family, and the Saturday Play Reading Series which will include Jason Kim's The Way to the Fire (July 15), Emily Kaczmarek's Soft Target (July 22), Sopan Deb's The Good Name (July 29), and Beth Henley's Downstairs Neighbor (August 5).
Casting and Artists-in-Residence will be announced at a later date.
