Tony nominee Jodi Benson, who famously voiced the role of Ariel in the animated Disney film The Little Mermaid, will star in OFC Creations Theatre Center's upcoming production of the classic American musical Gypsy.
Benson, a Tony nominee for her performance in the Gershwin musical Crazy for You, will play Rose in the staging of the Arthur Laurents-Jule Styne-Stephen Sondheim musical January 30-February 16, 2025, in Rochester New York. She will be joined by her daughter, Delaney Benson, as Louise.
The Bensons previously played these roles in a 2023 production in Florida.
Eric Vaughn Johnson will direct the limited engagement with additional casting and creative team members to be announced.
Suggested by the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee, Gypsy features a book by Laurents, music by Styne, and lyrics by Sondheim. The musical bowed on Broadway in May 1959 at the Broadway Theatre, playing 702 performances before closing at the Imperial Theatre, where it later transferred, March 25, 1961. Ethel Merman starred as Rose in the original production; subsequent Broadway Roses include Angela Lansbury, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, and Patti LuPone. The latest Broadway revival is currently in previews at the Majestic starring Audra McDonald, Danny Burstein, and Joy Woods.
Gypsy is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Tams-Witmark LLC.
