The work centers on a white family who, while closing out the estate of their late father, discover some disturbing artifacts that force them to confront their family's past. The play was previously produced in 2014 Off-Broadway at Signature Theatre.
“The Globe launches its 2025 season with one of the most exciting plays in recent memory,” said Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein in a statement. “With Appropriate, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins reinvents the American family play even as he grapples with big questions of history and national identity. That he does this while delivering an evening of fierce laughter and theatrical thrills is a truly remarkable achievement. The very gifted director Steve H. Broadnax III, who makes his Globe debut, has gathered a powerhouse cast who will unleash the potent energy of this extraordinary play in a production Globe audiences are sure to embrace. I’m delighted to bring it, and these great artists, to San Diego.”
Appropriate won three 2024 Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Play, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for Sarah Paulson, and Best Lighting Design of a Play for Jane Cox.
The upcoming production will also have scenic design by Arnel Sancianco, costume design by Celeste Jennings, lighting design by Alan C. Edwards, sound design by Curtis Craig, and casting by David Caparelliotis and Joe Gery of Caparelliotis Casting. Norman Anthony Small is the production stage manager.
