Adam Kantor (The Band’s Visit, Rent) plays Jon in a new production of the late Jonathan Larson's semi-autobiographical musical tick, tick…BOOM! that began performances at Miami's Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre November 13.

Directed by Rent's Andy Señor Jr. and choreographed by Emmy winner Karla Puno Garcia, the limited engagement is currently scheduled through December 8 in the Balcony Theatre in Miami.

Joining Kantor onstage are María Bilbao (Sweeney Todd) as Susan and two-time Carbonell nominee Nate Promkul (Hundred Days) as Michael.

The musical follows the young composer during a milestone birthday in 1990, through his theatrical ambitions and his relationships and friendships against the backdrop of the AIDS epidemic. The work began its life as a “rock monologue” that Larson, best known for his Broadway musical Rent, performed as a solo show. Five years after his 1996 death, the work was adapted into a three-character musical, with David Auburn filling in as a script consultant. That version has since played Off-Broadway, in London, and at theatres around the world. Lin-Manuel Miranda directed a 2021 film adaptation for Netflix starring Andrew Garfield.

David Nagy is the musical director. The production also features scenic design by Frank Oliva, costume design by Ellis Tillman, lighting design by Eric Nelson, sound design by Reidar Sorensen, and set dressing and properties design by Jodi Dellaventura plus assistant choreography by Sarah Crane.

Director Señor Jr. played Angel in Larson's Rent on Broadway, the West End, and in international tours and later was associate director to Michael Greif on the musical's Off-Broadway revival. He subsequently re-staged the musical in Japan, Korea, and for the historic production in Havana, Cuba—a journey documented in his HBO Original Documentary Revolution Rent.
