Broadway News Daniel Craig Announces Macbeth's Free Student Ticket Initiative With Stephen Colbert

Craig talks about bringing locals back to Broadway and "the only decent married couple in Shakespeare."

Daniel Craig told Stephen Colbert in a February 16 interview on The Late Show that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are "the only decent married couple in Shakespeare." Audiences will soon be able to decide for themselves if they agree; Macbeth begins its limited engagement at Broadway's Longacre Theatre March 29, with opening night set for April 28.

Craig also announced Macbeth 2022: Ticket Initiative, which will provide at least 2,022 fully-funded tickets to high school and college students for free.

Helping make the initiative possible is the production's partnerships with Omega, Baccarat, The Capri Foundation for the Advancement of Diversity in Fashion, and American Express. The goal is to eliminate the financial barrier for students from underrepresented communities and open up access to the Broadway show. The Opportunity Network, Fund II Foundation, NYC Department of Education, the City University of New York, Power, International House, UNCF, PowHERful Foundation, Ron Brown Scholars, and the Fashion Institute of Technology are all partnering to distribute the tickets.

Along with the initiative, the program will provide further engagement opportunities, interactive content, and select resources to contribute to students' educational experiences. The program echoes similar projects from Broadway's The Music Man and The Broadway League.

Starring opposite Craig will be Ruth Negga as the relentless Lady Macbeth in the tragic play filled with ambition and murder. Sam Gold is directing the production; Gold has previously worked with Craig on New York Theatre Workshop's Othello with David Oyelowo in the title role.

The full cast and creative team was announced earlier this week; the former will feature Phillip James Brannon, Grantham Coleman, Asia Kate Dillon, Maria Dizzia, Amber Gray, Emeka Guindo, Paul Lazar, Bobbi MacKenzie, Michael Patrick Thornton, and Danny Wolohan. Che Ayende, Eboni Flowers, and Peter Smith will complete the ensemble and Stevie Ray Dallimore will be the standby for Macbeth.
