The regional premiere of Beautiful—The Carole King Musical begins its week-long engagement at The Muny June 12. Playing the outdoor venue through June 18, the limited engagement is directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge with choreography by Patricia Wilcox and music direction by Charlie Alterman.
Sara Sheperd stars as Carole King, joined by Jarrod Spector as Barry Mann, Jackie Burns as Cynthia Weil, Steven Good as Gerry Goffin, Noah Weisberg as Don Kirshner, and Sharon Hunter as Genie Klein. Completing the cast are Corey Barrow, John Battagliese, Jett Blackorby, Kelly Liz Bolick, Shawn Bowers, Tavis Kordell Cunningham, Anna Gassett, Talya Groves, Alia Hodge, Kennedy Holmes, Sage Lee, Sandie Lee, Spencer Davis Milford, Tavia Riveé, Mike Schwitter, Byron St. Cyr, and the Muny Teen youth ensemble.
The bio-musical follows King’s rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history.
Featured on the creative team are scenic designer Ryan Douglass, costume designer Tracy Christensen, lighting designer Rob Denton, sound designer John Shivers and David Patridge, video designer Kylee Loera, and wig designer J. Jared Janas.
Beautiful features a book by Tony and Oscar nominee Douglas McGrath with a score comprising popular songs written by King, Goffin, Weil, and Mann. Beautiful–The Carole King Musical opened on Broadway at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre January 12, 2014. It played 2,418 regular performances and closed October 27, 2019.
