Tony and Oscar Nominee Allison Janney Talks About Penning a Potential Oscar Win Speech
The actor has won the SAG Award, Golden Globe, and BAFTA Awards for I, Tonya and talks about what will happen if she wins the Academy Award.
Allison Janney is on a roll. She won the AACTA International Award, the Hollywood Film Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA Award, and more for her portrayal of LaVona Golden in I, Tonya, the film about Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding, her rise in the ranks, and the injury to her rival Nancy Kerrigan.
Late-night host Jimmy Kimmel asked Janney if she had anything left to say in an awards acceptance speech as she is nominated for an Oscar for the role. (Kimmel will be hosting the ceremony March 4.)
“I’ve never been very good at writing. It takes me five hours to write a five word thank-you note,” Janney said. “I've asked all of my friends who I think are good writers to write things should I win. So I can take the best from each one and throw it together and make it mine, as it were.”

The upcoming ceremony marks Janney’s first trip to the Oscars, as a nominee or otherwise. “Someone asked me to go as their date once, and I said, ‘No, I only want to go if I’m nominated,’” she said. “I’m taking Steven Rogers as my date —he wrote the movie and wrote this part for me.”
A two-time Tony nominee, Janney earned nods for her performances in 1998’s A View From the Bridge and 2009’s 9 to 5, for which she won a Drama Desk Award. She most recently appeared on Broadway in 2017 in Six Degrees of Separation opposite John Benjamin Hickey. She made her Broadway debut in the 1996 revival of Noël Coward’s Present Laughter. Janney is also a seven-time Emmy winner for her roles on Mom (two), Masters of Sex (one), and The West Wing (four).
