Off-Broadway News The Civilians' Artificial Flavors, Hershey Felder's Monsieur Chopin, More Join 59E59 Fall Lineup

The Off-Broadway theatre company celebrates their 20th anniversary this season.

59E59 Theaters has announced the lineup for their fall 2023 season. The Off-Broadway theatre company, celebrating their 20th anniversary this season, will stage eight productions from October through the new year.

Opening first, The Civilians' Artificial Flavors will run October 22—November 19. Created and directed by Steve Cosson, the work explores the future of AI and its role in theatre, with a different partly-computer-generated show every night.

Next, No. 11 Productions' Pair will run November 3—18. Inspired by the lives of world-famous artists Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, Pair is a meditation on the nature of art and partnership. Ryan Emmons will direct.

Running November 16—December 24 will be Monsieur Chopin. Created by and starring Hershey Felder, the work centers on Polish pianist-composer Fryderyk Chopin in his Parisian salon, where he will teach a piano lesson just days after the February 1848 revolution.

Devised by Happenstance Theater and co-directed by Mark Jaster and Sabrina Mandell, ADRIFT: A Medieval Wayward Folly brings to life characters from the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch and archetypes from the tarot in a medieval tapestry of theatre. The work will have a limited run November 29—December 24.

Closing out the year will be Liz Richardson's Unconfined, running from December 6—22. Written and performed by Richardson with direction by Ed Thomason, the monodrama reflects on the true story of a man who spent 18 years on death row.

Opening in the new year will be Michael Aguirre's The Greatest Hits Down Route 66, presented by New Light Theater Project, in association with Calliope Stage. Set to live music drawn from Carl Sandburg’s American Songbag, the eclectic 1920s anthology of American folk songs follows The Franco family as they journey on the Great American Road Trip. Sarah Norris will direct the production, which will feature musical arrangements by Grace Yukich and Jennifer C. Dauphinais. The Greatest Hits Down Route 66 will run January 13—February 18.

Next, ACT II Playhouse in association with Bud Martin will present Beverly Johnson: In Vogue. Written by Beverly Johnson and Josh Ravetch—with Johnson starring and Ravetch directing—the work spotlights Johnson's groundbreaking career as a supermodel, from being the first Black woman to appear on the cover of American Vogue, to her key role in the #MeToo movement. It will run January 9—28.

Closing out the 2023—2024 season will be Alice Jankell's The Sweet Spot, running from January 11—January 27. Directed by Page Clements, it follows Jerry and Vita, a passionate couple with 50 years of marriage under their belts, who must make a life-changing decision when the opportunity arises to move to an assisted living community much sooner than they expected.
