The Sam Gold-directed Broadway revival of William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet may not be a musical—but that doesn't mean there's no songs!
The production, which officially opened October 24, swung by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert October 29 to perform “Man of the House,” one of two songs Rachel Zegler sings in the production. Check out video of the performance above.
Performed by Zegler and written by Jack Antonoff alongside Ryan Beatty, the track has already been released via Shadow of the City, a record label founded by Antonoff as a subsidiary of indie label Dirty Hit. The track is available on all streaming platforms now.
Playing the Circle in the Square Theatre, the production opened October 24. Read the reviews here. The limited engagement will continue through February 16, 2025. Emmy winner Kit Connor (Heartstopper) and Golden Globe winner Zegler (María in Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story) star in the revival, which features music by Grammy winner Antonoff and movement by Tony winner Sonya Tayeh.
Press notes for the revival describe the classic tragedy as such: "The youth are fucked. Left to their own devices in their parents’ world of violent ends, an impulsive pair of star-crossed lovers hurtle towards their inescapable fate. The intoxicating high of passion quickly descends into a brutal chaos that can only end one way."
Connor and Zegler are joined by Gabby Beans (Skin of Our Teeth) as Mercutio/The Friar, Tommy Dorfman (13 Reasons Why) as The Nurse/Tybalt, Nihar Duvvuri as Balthazar, Sola Fadiran (Camelot) as Capulet/Lady Capulet, Daniel Bravo Hernández as Abraham, Taheen Modak as Benvolio, Jasai Chase-Owens (The Expanse) as Gregory, and Gían Pérez (Sing Street) as Samson/Paris/Peter. Understudies Missy Malek, Timothy Oh, Susannah Perkins (The Wolves), and Daniel Velez round out the company. Casting is by Taylor Williams.
The production also features scenic design by dots, costume design by Enver Chakartash, lighting design by Isabella Byrd, sound design by Tony winner Cody Spencer, hair, wig, and makeup design by Robert Pickens and Katie Gell, and violence by Drew Leary.
Claire Warden serves as intimacy director, Gigi Buffington serves as voice and text coach, and Michael Sexton and Ayanna Thompson serve as dramaturgy and text consultants. Production stage management is by Rachel Bauder, Juniper Street Productions is the production manager, and 101 Productions, Ltd is the general manager.
