Industry News R.Evolución Latina Announces Doreen Montalvo Scholarship Applications Open

The scholarship honors the late Broadway artist who made her debut in In the Heights.

R.Evolución Latina has opened applications for the third annual offering of the "Do It Anyway" Doreen Montalvo Scholarship. Open to artists pursuing a career in the arts and making societal change, applicants must be 30 years or older to apply.

Applications are due by January 27 to be considered for the scholarship, which will be given to one recipient and includes an award of $1,000. Participating on this year's selection committee will be composer and music director Jaime Lozano, Jenn Gambatese (Mrs. Doubtfire), Rosie Fiedelman (The Lion King), and director-choreographer Luis Salgado, founder and director of R.Evolución Latina.

In honor of the late Doreen Montalvo, who made her Broadway debut in In the Heights at 44 years old, the scholarship supports artists who continuing to follow their dreams no matter their stage in life. Originally from the Bronx and of Puerto Rican heritage, Montalvo also starred in On Your Feet! and Mrs. Doubtfire, as well as the film adaptations of In the Heights and West Side Story. At R.Evolución Latina, Montalvo taught acting and singing for 12 years as part of its performing arts camp for children.

“We are committed to keeping Doreen’s legacy alive by inspiring other artists to be role models like she was for the artistic Latino community. She strived for her best as an artist, and went beyond in her social contribution to help others and inspire new generations,” said Salgado.
