Founded by Julia Jordan, Marsha Norman and Theresa Rebeck, the Lilly Awards were started in spring 2010 as a way to honor the work of women in the American theatre. The awards are named for Lillian Hellman, a pioneering American playwright who said, "You need to write like the devil and act like one when necessary."
Laks, the League's former executive vice president and general counsel, has been serving in the role on an interim basis since the departure of Charlotte St. Martin.
