This season, Ma-Yi Theatre Company will support the development of three new works, in addition to partnering with La Jolla Playhouse to present the world premiere of Lisa Sanaye Dring's Sumo, which will run at the San Diego venue September 26–October 22.

Ma-Yi will develop Haruna Lee's 49 Days and Michi Barall's Drawing Lessons. Barall was the inaugural recipient of the company's Generation Now commission.

The group has also named Lloyd Suh and Diana Oh as this year's recipients of the Generation Now commission, for their work on their new musical The Science Fair Project.

The Generation Now commission brings together five cohort theatres—the Ma-Yi Theatre Company, the Children's Theatre Company, Penumbra, the Latino Theatre Company, and the Native Voices at the Autry—to commission and develop new works for multigenerational audiences over a five-year period. Other cohorts include The Latino Theatre Company, Penumbra, and Native Voices at The Autry.
