The Broadway production of Women on the Verge, which opened Nov. 4, 2010, at the Belasco Theatre was short-lived. The musical played 30 previews and 69 performances when it closed Jan. 2, 2011.
Tony Award-winning director Bartlett Sher, who helmed the elaborate Broadway production, is also staging the London premiere, which has been refocused and re-imagined on a more intimate scale. Performances begin Dec. 16 at the Playhouse Theatre.
The cast includes Willemijn Verkaik, Ricardo Alfonso, Haydn Oakley, Tamsin Greig, Haydn Gwynne, Jérôme Pradon, Anna Skellern, Marianne Benedict, Holly James, Michael Matus, Rebecca McKinnis, Sarah Moyle, Alastair Natkiel, Nuno Queimado and Dale Rapley.
Based on the Academy Award-nominated 1988 film by Almodovar, the musical was adapted for the stage by Tony Award-nominated Dirty Rotten Scoundrels collaborators Yazbek (music and lyrics) and Lane (book).
The musical includes such songs as "Madrid," "Lie to Me," "Lovesick," "Time Stood Still," "Model Behavior," "My Crazy Heart," "The Microphone," "Island," "On the Verge," "Mother's Day," "Invisible" and "Talk to Me."
The New York premiere boasted Patti LuPone, Sherie Rene Scott, Laura Benanti and Brian Stokes Mitchell.
