Broadway stars including Tony Award nominee Jenn Colella from Come From Away, Alysha Umphress from On the Town, and Michael Wartella of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will show off their rock chops when they take part in a December 4 New York City salute to The Beatles.
Broadway Sings The Beatles will showcase many of the band’s hits, including “Let it Be,” “Yesterday,” “Hey Jude,” “Blackbird,” and “Come Together.”
The 7:30 PM concert will take place at the concert Hall at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, 2 West 64th Street, Manhattan, and will also feature performances by Steel Burkhardt (Aladdin), Dawn Cantwell (Wicked), Patrice Covington (The Color Purple), Drew Gehling (Waitress), Brittney Johnson (Sunset Boulevard), Alison Luff (the forthcoming Escape to Margaritaville), Corey Mach (Godspell), Jelani Remy (The Lion King), Antoine L. Smith (Miss Saigon), and others to be announced in the coming weeks.
Though the Beatles themselves never played Broadway, their music has been featured in several anthology shows, including Let It Be (2013) and the long-running Beatlemania (1977). Band co-founder John Lennon was the subject of a biographical musical, Lennon (2005). Though the band stayed together only from 1960 to 1970, they generated dozens of Top 10 hits in the U.S. and U.K. and came to incarnate the spirit of that age. Selling more than 600 million recordings around the world, they topped Billboard magazine's 2008 list of the all-time most successful “Hot 100” artists. They also hold the record for the most No. 1 hits (17) on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart. Lennon and bandmate George Harrison have passed away, but surviving band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr continue to perform today as solo artists.
The band‘s music will be played on Broadway by a 14-piece orchestra performing original arrangements by Joshua Stephen Kartes.
