The upcoming Off-Broadway bow of Michael Griffo's Pen Pals has added a roster of stars to a now-rotating cast that will perform the work at St. Clement's Theatre. Performances begin December 5 ahead of a December 11 opening night with SuzAnne Barabas directing. A portion of proceeds will go to breast cancer non-profit Susan G. Komen.
Previously announced stars Johanna Day and Nancy McKeon will play performances December 5-22 and February 5-9, 2025. In the interim, a number of leading ladies will take on the work, including Catherine Curtin and Sharon Lawrence (December 26-29), Nia Vardalos (January 2-12, 2025), Mary Beth Peil (January 15-26), and Pauletta Washington (January 29-February 2). Co-stars for Vardalos, Peil, and Washington are to be announced.
The work follows Bernie and Mags, two women living in different countries who are best friends despite having never met, thanks to a 50-year pen-pal relationship. The work made its world premiere in October at New Jersey Repertory Company. McKeon and Barabas are reprising their work from that run.
"Having this incredible ensemble of powerhouse women bring Pen Pals to life is an absolute joy and privilege," says Lisa Dozier Shacket, who leads the producing team. "Each of them brings a unique voice and depth to this remarkable story of friendship and resilience. It’s an honor to share this journey with such a dynamic group of artists who embody the heart and soul of what this play is all about."
Also reprising their work from the New Jersey run are set designer Jessica Parks, lighting designer Jill Nagle, and sound designer Nick Simone. The Off-Broadway bow will feature costume design by David C. Wollard, with Rose Riccardi serving as production stage manager.
Shacket is producing with Anthony Hazzard and Scott Stolzenberg in association with NJ Repertory Company. Logan DeWitt is associate producer.
