The world premiere of Vicuña by Other Desert Cities playwright Jon Robin Baitz seems more timely now than ever before. The politically-charged satire from the Pulitzer finalist follows a real estate Tycoon and reality TV star who wants to be President, and the renowned tailor who must serve him. Performances began October 23 at the Center Theatre Group’s Kirk Douglas Theatre and continue through November 20.
Playwright Alena Smith (Showtime’s The Affair, HBO’s The Newsroom) and Geffen Playhouse artistic director Randall Arney have teamed up for the world premiere of Icebergs, a new comedy about a generation of thirtysomethings trying to navigate filmmaking and family planning. An ideal play for anybody struggling to lay down roots before everything melts away. Performances run November 8-December 18 at the Geffen.
Leah Nanako Winkler’s coming-of-age story Kentucky, which made its debut Off-Broadway at the Ensemble Studio Theatre and garnered positive reviews from New York City critics, makes the move to the East West Players Theatre for its West Coast premiere. Identity, religion, and love collide in this tale of two sisters on very different paths in life. Performances run November 10-December 11.
The Los Angeles tryout of the Broadway-aimed musical, Amélie, begins at the Ahmanson Theatre for an engagement scheduled to run December 4-January 15, 2017. Phillipa Soo, who wowed audiences in the original Off-Broadway run of Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 and earned a Tony nomination as Best Actress in a Musical for her Broadway debut as Eliza Schuyler in Hamilton, stars in the title role.
Following his acclaimed 2012 opera The Importance of Being Earnest, Irish composer Gerald Barry returns to the LA Philharmonic November 22 with Alice's Adventures, his take on Lewis Carroll's celebrated novel, Alice in Wonderland. With a libretto by Barry, the world-premiere production is conducted by Thomas Adès, and stars Barbara Hannigan as Alice.
Something extra: Hollywood’s annual Christmas parade returns November 27 to make the trek down the popular three-mile route. Each year, the event attracts more than one million in attendance, with larger-than-life characters, bands and performers, ornate floats, and celebrity-filled cars. This year’s lineup of guests includes Olivia Newton-John, who will be grand marshal, as well as Cyndi Lauper, Kenny G, and more.
