Mikey's Army, a new short film written by Eric Ulloa and directed by Andrew Keenan-Bolger, will make its New York City festival debut next month. The coming-of-age story will screen as part of NewFest's 35th Annual New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival. 

The film is set to play Sunday, October 15 at 12 PM at Nitehawk Prospect Park and Thursday, October 19 at 4 PM at SVA Theatre. Mikey's Army will appear in the festival as part of NewFest's partnership with the NYC Department of Education and participating schools to curate affirming LGBTQ+ films for teen audiences. The film previously screened at Los Angeles' Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC film festival earlier this year.

Mikey's Army follows 16 year old Mikey Alvarez, who is struggling with whether or not to open up to those around him. Mikey unwittingly conjures courage from a trio of guides—a drag queen, an international pop star, and an action film heartthrob—who just might be able to give him the confidence he needs. 

The cast features Mark “Markie” Aguirre as Mikey, Claybourne Elder (Company) as Chad Hartman, Krystina Alabado (Mean Girls) as Autumn Jones, Shuga Cain (RuPaul's Drag Race) as Lady Slay, Jennifer Sánchez (Pretty Woman) as Mom, and Timmy Thompson as Brian.

The creative team for Mikey’s Army also includes cinematographer Alejandro Mejía AMC. Editing is by Keenan-Bolger, and production design is by Rachel Buksbazen, Keenan-Bolger, and Sandy Shelton.

Founded in 1988 in direct response to the AIDS crisis, The New York LGBTQ+ Film Festival has been a tentpole of NYC’s queer cultural scene. In the subsequent years, NewFest has expanded into a film and media organization with year-long programs to serve all facets of the LGBTQ+ community.
