A new short film Mikey's Army, written by Eric Ulloa (On Your Feet!) and directed by Andrew Keenan-Bolger (Newsies), will screen at the 2023 Outfest Fusion QTBIPOC film festival in Los Angeles. The film will play TLC Chinese 6 Theatres March 25 at 12 noon, with online screenings available March 29–April 2.
The film follows 16-year-old Mikey Alvarez conjuring support from a drag queen, pop star, and action film heartthrob to get the confidence he needs to be open and live his truth.
Mark "Markie" Aguirre stars as Mikey, with the cast also including Claybourne Elder (Company) as Chad Hartman, Krystina Alabado (Mean Girls) as Autumn Jones, Shuga Cain (RuPaul's Drag Race) as Lady Slay, Jennifer Sánchez (The Rose Tattoo) as Mom, and Timmy Thompson as Brian.
The producing team includes Jamie Forshaw, Evan Mayer, Kyle Beckley Abourizk, Thomas Laub, and Mike Mosallam, with Thomas Schumacher, Drama Club Productions, and Reyana Productions as executive producers. The film features cinematography by Alejandro Mejía; editing by Keenan-Bolger; production design by Rachel Buksbazen, Keenan-Bolger, and Sandy Shelton; and music by Brett Rybeck.
