Inspired by a true story, Bright Star travels through 1920s and 1940s North Carolina as magazine editor Alice Murphy tells her story of love, loss, and redemption.

The musical, directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Josh Rhodes, received a Tony nomination for Best Musical in 2016; also nominated were Martin and Brickell for their bluegrass-infused score; Martin for the book; and August Eriksmoen for Best Orchestrations.

Prior to starring in Bright Star, Cusack appeared in the U.K. in Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera, Off-Broadway in Carrie, and as Elphaba in various productions of Wicked around the world. Her recent solo show, If You Knew My Story, featured several songs from Bright Star, including numbers that were ultimately cut.
