Following an injury, Christopher Abbott performed the December 6 performance of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea Off-Broadway entirely on crutches.
According to online reports from audience members, an announcement was made prior to the show that Abbott, despite his injury, would perform the show in full. The play notably features a dance scene between Abbott's character, opposite Aubrey Plaza's, and despite the unexpected circumstances, the dance was also performed.
Danny and the Deep Blue Sea starts off with Abbott's character emerging from a fight, so several audience members online wrote that the crutches not only didn't disrupt the plot, but actually enhanced it further.
Abbott's injury coincides with another theatre performer declaring that "the show must go on" this week, with How to Dance in Ohio's Caesar Samayoa returning to the stage with a "Harry Potter mark" on his forehead.
The Off-Broadway production of Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, starring Aubrey Plaza and Christopher Abbott, is running at the Lucille Lortel Theatre through January 13, 2024. See the photos in the gallery below.
John Patrick Shanley's play follows Danny and Roberta, two desperate people in the Bronx that have a chance meeting in a dive bar. What follows is an encounter "so dangerous and so beautiful" that it "redefines the meaning of love." Abbott and Plaza play Danny and Roberta, respectively.
Jeff Ward is making his stage directorial debut with the production, which features movement by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, scenic design by Scott Pask, lighting design by John Torres, costume design by Arianne Phillips, and sound design by Kate Marvin.
