Position: Production Carpenter
Department: Production
Reports to: Head Carpenter
FLSA Classification: Hourly
Compensation: The base pay rate is set by the current IATSE Local 15 CBA contract rate, currently at $45.16. This position has a 46 week guarantee.

Benefits: Benefits are provided through Local 15 according to the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Work Location: The 5th Avenue Theatre administrative offices located within Skinner Building (1326 5th Avenue, Suite 735); The 5th Avenue Scene Shop in South Seattle (860 S Cambridge St), and the warehouse in Kent (22703 72nd Ave S).

Position Overview:

The Production Carpenter works with the Technical Director, Head Carpenter, and affected Department Heads to plan seasonal and show-specific Carpentry Department labor, projects, staffing and equipment needs. The ability to work overtime, evening, and weekend hours based on performance schedules is essential to this position.

This position is represented by IATSE, Local No. 15.

The 5th Avenue Theatre is a member of LORT (League of Resident Theaters), and produces on a LORT A stage, including educational performances and tours.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Technical Director and Scenic Designer to determine the overall scenic and automation specifications for each production
  • Support the visions of the Director, Scenic Designer, and Music Director
  • With the Technical Direction team, generate and manage drawings and documentation for hang charts, unit lists, off-stage scenery and properties storage plans, truck packs, automation inventory, and scenic installation assembly information
  • Create load in/load out plans with the Head Carpenter and affected Department Heads
  • Assist the technical and creative teams in planning and development of production scenery and production infrastructure projects
  • Coordinate with the Head Builder, Head Carpenter, and automation programmer(s) to execute the fabrication, modification, installation, and operation of production automation systems and associated scenery and infrastructure
  • With the Technical Direction team, Head Builder, and any other affected Department Head, problem solve technical issues which arise during the planning, build, load-in, technical rehearsal, and changeover processes
  • As required, attend meetings, run-throughs, technical and dress rehearsals, preview performances, and performances
  • In conjunction with the Carpentry Department, prepare, maintain, install and/or remove scenery, rigging, or automation systems and equipment for all productions at The 5th
  • Provide technical support for other in-house functions, special events, and education events
  • Uphold the artistic standards and achieve the artistic vision of The 5th Avenue Theatre
  • Model and support the mission and values of The 5th Avenue Theatre

Qualifications and Desired Competencies:
The ideal candidate for this position will possess most of these skills and qualifications.

  • Successful candidates for this role must engage in collaborative and positive interactions with designers, directors, stage managers, and personnel from various departments.
  • Skilled in stage carpentry with significant experience in large-scale theatrical productions
  • Experience with long term project management from planning to implementation
  • Proficiency in technical platforms including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel) on a PC, AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks
  • Experience building, maintaining, and updating systems processes to reflect necessary changes
  • Ability to read technical drawings as they apply to scaled plans, as needed
  • Experience in budgeting, and responsible and effective handling of designated funds
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of theatrical safety regulations, best practices, and laws to ensure personal and collective safety while operating within the theatre and warehouses
  • Familiarity with varied elements of production including: scenic painting, costume construction, wardrobe, wigs, lighting, sound, and props
  • Moderate to advanced knowledge in automation; theatrical rigging system creation, operation, and troubleshooting; scenic construction, and performance running
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills (fluency in English is required)
  • Ability to analyze and understand issues pertaining to equity, diversity, and inclusion

Physical Demands:

The Production Carpenter position is a physically demanding job:

  • This position will occasionally be required to work at height from a ladder, fixed position or platform, or mobile personnel lift
  • Lifting and rotating with heavy objects, up to 75 lbs
  • Candidate should be able to perform administrative work using a computer for extended periods of time; up to 6 hours a day.
  • This role will periodically need to transfer to the theater and monitor tech rehearsals (typically sitting in theater seats while using a laptop) for extended periods of time, up to 14 hours a day.
  • This role should be able to stand and work for long periods of time on foot.
  • Duties will require stooping, bending, and reaching.
