“Have you ever wondered what it would be like if Glinda in Wicked was a man, or if the Witch in Into the Woods was played by a drag queen? Join us at 54 Below for “A Gay’s Dream: Broadway’s Leading Ladies with a Male Twist,” featuring male and non-binary performers and drag artists performing songs sung by female characters in musical theater! Produced and directed by Toby Chernesky, this show celebrates the commonly felt desire to sing female songs like “Defying Gravity” or “I’m Still Hurting,” in a dazzling evening of diverse performances of your favorite leading ladies like you’ve never seen before! Audiences can expect a community celebration of queeress, all types of voices, spectacle and authenticity, up-and-coming performers and your favorite NYC drag artists, all wrapped up in a beautiful bow bound to leave you gagged!”
AUDITION GUIDELINES
Submissions for this cabaret are open to all performers of all gender identities and expressions, but must fit into one of the two following categories:
Male and non-binary identifying artists and drag performers who are interested in singing female identifying character material should submit two cuts exceeding one minute in length of a female character’s song from a musical, in any key. We encourage you to showcase versatility and range, whether that be vocally (countertenor, low bass) or in performance (campy, genuine, etc.).
Performers of any identity, particularly female identifying performers, who are interested in playing additional roles in duets and group numbers (i.e. Paul in “Getting Married Today”) should submit a vocal reel or two cuts of any musical theater song exceeding one minute in length. Please note that while this will not include solo material, performers in this category will have numerous features in the show.
**You may submit for both categories, and performers submitting for the first category will be considered for both.
Performers will be required to attend 1-2 rehearsals (depending on level of involvement) in addition to a dress rehearsal and soundcheck on the day of the performance:
Individual rehearsal slots the first 3 weeks of February by sign-up
Dress rehearsal on 2/22 from 3-6 PM. (subject to change based on performer availability)
Soundcheck from 1 PM to 3 PM at 54 Below on Feb. 26.
And the show of course :)
