“John brought his entire yearbook [to me for reference]. There’s a woman in [the show] who is the wife of the headmaster, and it’s based on a real person. I knew that her relatives were going to come, I also knew that her character was very important to John and that he had a vision for her. I knew what she really looked like, but that was only inspiration for me. Again, I had to create a character, but there was an element of ‘this is a real person.’” (Above: Annika Boras)

In Dada Woof Papa Hot “John [Lee Beatty]’s sest was very neutral. It’s very important that the close be very real to reflect these people are well-to-do, but also have some color.” (Above: Alex Hurt, John Benjamin Hickey, Stephen Plunkett, and Patrick Breen)

“Rather than sketching, I used a lot of painters and pictures as inspiration.” (Above: John Benjamin Hickey and Patrick Breen)
“I buy clothes and, in a way, it’s like sculpting in the fitting with me and the actor.” (Above: Tammy Blanchard and John Pankow)
For Disgraced, “Ayad [Akhtar], the playwright, was very specific about what Amir was wearing. This is a guy who has done everything he cana to be a big success, and he comes from an immigrant background. It’s so important that he has the right suit and you can’t fake that.” (Above: Gretchen Mol and Hari Dhilloon)
“They talk about the shirt, in the play. Amir’s $600 shirt. This is very important how he’s presenting himself to the world so that when he looks perfect [it’s purposeful]. It has to look perfect because then the stakes become much higher for him and that’s an example of when clothes are supporting what his character is going through and what the stakes are for him.” (Above: Hari Dhillon and Josh Radnor)
“Josh Radnor, who played Isaac, he and I really spent a lot of time talking about what curators [like his character] look like.”
“You know what was the hardest costume in Disgraced for me? Was Gretchen Mole’s character for me in the dinner scene. First of all she has to look fabulous and she wore a dress with an almost Islamic design on it. It was red. The dress, she has to look fabulous, again the stakes are high. But also I wanted it to reflect her sensibilities as an artist and she’s also hosting Isaac, who we find out she’s had an affair with, who is a curator which is very important to her. But not only that, she has to be beaten up in that dress eight times a week.” (Above: Gretchen Mol, Karen Pittman, Hari Dhillon, Josh Radnor)
