Sutton Foster has a conundrum. Well, actually Liza does, Foster's character on TVLand’s Younger, which comes back for Season 6 June 12.
Liza first got the idea to assume the life of a 20somethingafter meeting tattoo artist Josh in a local Williamsburg bar, where he assumed the 40-year-old was 26. The misperception sparked Liza’s journey back to her publishing career by pretending she was an ambitious young professional, instead of a woman who took years off to be a mom. While the television show illuminates issues of ageism against the backdrop of female friendship and women in the workplace, Younger gets heated with its core love triangle. Are you #TeamJosh or #TeamCharles?
Tortorella is firmly #TeamJosh—possibly because he is, in fact, Josh, and he's happy to wait out #TeamCharles. “We’re getting through the Charles stuff that needs to happen right now, but it’s getting boring fast," he says. "And Josh and Liza are the end game. I really do think so.”
Season 5 left off in a The Graduate kind of way, Liza and Charles finally holding hands in public after hiding their relationship, nervous looks on their faces that suggest “Now what?” But that doesn’t deter Tortorella.
“Liza and Josh have done a good job of keeping their friendship really strong and being there for each other,” he insists. “Their relationship isn’t dependent on them having sex. I think that’s something that needs to be celebrated in all relationship, especially on television.”
Still, don’t count out Charles. Hermann has faith in his character’s relationship with Liza. “The writers, they write human beings,” he says, “and human beings and relationships are complicated. And people who are crazy about each other working out how to be together is a complicated thing. So do I think they’re compatible in the real world? Yes. Deeply so.
“They’re two human beings who are trying to figure out how to be together,” Hermann continues. “How to have a future together with all they want, and have wanted, and are willing to give up and are not willing to give up, and are willing to be honest and not honest about—the way human beings are and aren’t.”
“I have no idea how it’s going to end or who’s going to end up with who,” confides Molly Bernard, who plays Liza’s boundarieless friend Lauren.
And we don’t even know if Season 6 will be the deciding moment. TVLand has yet to announce a Season 7 or a series finale. As Liza has done for so many episodes, we’ll just have to wait and hope for the best.
