London's Why Am I So Single? has posted an early closing date, and will play its final performance January 19, 2025. The production had previously been set to play through February 13.
The show, written by SIX creators Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss, opened at the Garrick Theatre September 12. Read the reviews here.
Producers are blaming the early demise on "the current economic climate" in a statement, going on to share that the title may still have future stagings ahead: "We are not discounting the possibility of bringing the show back into London in the future and, with discussions about potential productions in the U.S. and around the world already underway, we are confident that it is just the beginning for this extraordinary show."
"We are so grateful to our truly remarkable cast who have brought this work to life at every performance with such passion, talent, and commitment," say Marlow and Moss in their own joint statement. "We are so grateful to our wonderful company and creatives who have put all their humor and heart into our show. We are so grateful to everyone who has worked hard behind the scenes to bring Why Am I So Single? to the West End. We are so very grateful to the producers for taking such a risk on an original, ambitious musical like this and making our wildest dreams come true. And finally, we are SO grateful to everyone who has seen the show so far, and we hope more of you will be able to come and see it in the coming months! We are, of course, pretty sad that it’s coming to an end earlier than we’d hoped but we are very proud of the show and are super excited to see what the potential future journey looks like. We cannot WAIT for you all to listen to more of the music, which we’re working away at right now and, not to boast, but we think it’s going to BEE pretty great ;)."
With pop and musical-inspired songs, the show follows two perpetually single friends who can't figure out why they're so single or what to write their next musical about. The musical, featuring a book, music, and lyrics by Marlow and Moss, previously had a workshop at the Lilian Baylis Studio Theatre at Sadler's Wells in London last fall.
The cast is led by Jo Foster as Oliver, Leesa Tulley as Nancy, and Noah Thomas as Artie. The ensemble features Jemima Brown, Josh Butler, Ran Marner, Jamel Matthias, Olivia O'Connor, Natasha Wilde, and Rhys Wilkinson. Alternate Jordan Cambridge-Taylor and swings Callum Bell, Owen McHugh, and Caitlin Redpath round out the company. Casting is by Harry Blumenau and Sarah-Jane Price of Harry Blumenau Casting.
Directed by Moss, the production features choreography and co-direction by Ellen Kane; orchestrations, vocal arrangements, and music supervision by Joe Beighton; music direction by Chris Ma; music production by Future Cut; set design by Moi Train; costume design by Max Johns; lighting design by Jai Morjaria; sound design by Paul Gatehouse; and make-up design by Lisa Potter-Dixon. Kenny Wax, George Stiles, and Ameena Hamid serve as producers.
Though Why Am I So Single? closing, Marlow and Moss' other show, SIX: The Musical, is still enjoying a healthy run in London and Broadway.
