Tony winner Laura Benanti is set to bring her new solo show Nobody Cares to Audible's Minetta Lane Theatre February 2-4, 2024 at 7:00 PM. Benanti explained to Playbill why she, a Tony winner, chose that title for her show in the video above.
The evening of comedic storytelling—which is "a love letter to ingenues, and recovering ingenues, and moms, and anybody working on themselves," Benanti says—will feature original music co-written by Benanti and Todd Almond, who also serves as music director. Annie Tippe will direct.
"Getting to be a 44-year-old woman, I am now in a space where I just care a lot less about what people think of me, and I think that is a nice message to send to other women who are currently experiencing that," Benanti says. "Also young women, who are still in that prescriptive place of, 'You've got to be a nice girl, and you've got to make people happy, and you have to smile,' because you don't."
Having played several solo concerts throughout the country, Benanti is no stranger to entertaining a crowd on her own. But Nobody Cares is a new experience, as Benanti has written her own script and music. Benanti also said she is excited for audiences to see a more personal version of her, outside of a Broadway show, a film, or her famed Melania Trump impression.
Nobody Cares will also be recorded live from Off-Broadway's Minetta Lane Theatre and released on Audible at a later date.
"What I love about theatre is that it is ephemeral, so there's the excitement of knowing you were in that audience at that particular time, there's a beauty to that," Benanti says. "But also, that's the sad thing about theatre, [if] you didn't get to be there and experience it. So I'm really excited for people all over the country, and/or world, to be able to hear this."
The Nobody Cares creative team includes lighting designer Japhy Weideman and sound designer Connor Wang. Benanti will be joined onstage by Todd Almond, Matt Beck, Nate Brown, Clayton Craddock, Philip Payton, and Catherine Popper; and singers Ciara Harris and Kaila Wooten.
