Sara Ramirez and Peppermint will stand in for the late Cecilia Gentili later this year for a performance of her show Red Ink.
Ms. Gentili, who passed away this past February, was a trans icon, artist, and activist whose solo shows encouraged fierce honesty in the face of bigoted pressure to stay silent. At the time of her passing, Mr. Gentili was scheduled to perform an encore engagement of her solo show Red Ink, which explores her search for faith as a trans woman.
Ramirez and Peppermint will now perform the piece at Joe's Pub April 3 in tribute to Ms. Gentilli, with drag artist Chiquitita, Obie winner Qween Jean, and artists and activists Ceyenne Doroshow and Rio Sofia also joining the lineup.
Said director and producer Nic Cory, “Cecilia was a brilliant performer whose hilarious, heartbreaking work deserves to live on. In a time of deep loss, we are so honored to have such a fantastic cast performing Red Ink at Joe’s Pub. The night promises to be an unforgettable celebration of an unforgettable life.”
Ms. Gentili's acclaimed solo show had three Off-Broadway runs at Rattlestick Theater, and previously played The Wild Project twice as well.
The show has an all-trans and queer creative team, led by Cory, and features an original score by Grammy winner Andrew Yee, projections by Drag Race winner Sasha Velour, wardrobe by Gogo Graham, and lighting design by Honoré. Oscar Diaz serves as creative director.
