At the Tony Awards, after the statues are given to the winners, they are taken to the media room, where they speak to journalists about their prizes. Playbill was able to have some one-on-one time with some of the 2023 Tony winners. We spoke with director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw after winning the prize for Best Choreography for the Tony-nominated musical Some Like It Hot.
Watch the video above to see Nicholaw react to winning, where he was just visibly filled with joy, exclaiming, "I can't believe it's happening!" When speaking about Some Like It Hot, Nicholaw has these words for people who dismiss the musical because it's based on a film: "People think it's revival or something I've seen before, it's been done before. But it hasn't been done in this way. It feels like, to me, it's classic and contemporary at the same time."
Nicholaw, also nominated this year for his direction of Some Like It Hot, previously won a Best Direction of a Musical Tony for The Book of Mormon, for which he was also nominated for Best Choreography. His other Tony-nominated choreography includes Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone, Aladdin, and Mean Girls. His Broadway credits as a choreographer also include The Prom, Tuck Everlasting, Something Rotten!, Elf, and All About Me; 21 shows comprise Nicholaw's Broadway career to date with 13 Tony nominations.
