Who runs the world? Teenagers. Stage and screen star Toni Collette has joined the cast of Amazon Prime's The Power series, which takes place in a world where teenage girls have been given the power to electrocute people.
The thriller is based on a novel by Naomi Alderman and will star Collette in a role that was previously held by Leslie Mann. Variety reports the cast change (blamed on COVID-19 delays), also adding that Josh Charles will take over a role previously held by Tim Robbins and Rainn Wilson, and Raelle Tucker has joined as the showrunner.
Collette will play "genuinely progressive" Seattle mayor Margot Cleary-Lopez and Charles will play "political animal" Daniel Dandon. Also starring is Auli'i Cravalho (Moana), John Leguizamo, Eddie Marsan, Ria Zmitrowicz, Toheeb Jimoh (Ted Lasso), Zrinka Cvitesic (West End's Once), and Ana Ularu.
Along with their screen careers, Collette, Charles, and Leguizamo have substantial stage credits. Emmy, Golden Globe, and SAG winner Collette was last seen on Broadway in the 2014 production of The Realistic Joneses, which she starred in alongside Michael C. Hall, Tracy Letts, and Marisa Tomei. She also originated the role of Queenie in The Wild Party, earning her a Tony nomination for Best Leading Actress in a Musical.
Charles, known for starring in the TV series We Own This City and The Good Wife (earning him two Emmy nominations), made his Broadway debut in Straight White Man.
Tony winner Leguizamo wrote and performed in the one-man shows Freak (adapted into a four-time Emmy nominated movie by Spike Lee), Sexaholix, Ghetto Klown, and Latin History for Morons—all of which ran on Broadway—along with starring in the 2008 revival of American Buffalo.
Tucker, Jane Featherstone and Naomi de Pear will executive produce with author Alderman, Reed Morano, Claire Wilson, Tim Bricknell, and Sarah Quintrell.
