Film & TV News Broadway Takes Over 2022 Emmys! Andrew Garfield, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Steve Martin, More Receive Nominations

Nominations are in for the 74th Annual Emmy Awards.

Nominations are in for the 74th Annual Emmy Awards, and a host of Broadway favorites are among this year's nominees.

Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and Only Murders in the Building—all of which feature stage performers—received multiple nominations, including Outstanding Comedy Series. 

Individual nominations went to Tony nominee and Bright Star co-creator Steve Martin and Tony winner Martin Short for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series; Jean Smart, a Tony nominee for her role in The Man Who Came to Dinner, for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series; and Maisel actor Tony Shalhoub, a Tony winner for his role in The Band's Visit, was nominated for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Television stars Andrew Garfield and Sebastian Stan, famously known for their Marvel roles as Spider-Man/Peter Parker and The Winter Soldier/Bucky Barnes, respectively, and Oscar Isaac received individual nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie. Garfield received his nomination for his role in the Hulu limited series Under the Banner of Heaven. The Tony winner recently portrayed Rent playwright Jonathan Larson in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Tick, Tick...BOOM! Netflix adaptation, appeared on Broadway in the revivals of Death of a Salesman and Angels in America.

Isaac was nominated for HBO's Scenes from a Marriage, and has starred in previous off-Broadway productions of Romeo & Juliet and Hamlet, both at The Public. He is set to star in a New York Theatre Workshop production of Three Sisters.

Stan, nominated portraying Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee in Hulu's Pam & Tommy, made his Broadway debut in 2007 in Talk Radio. He later starred in the Broadway revival Picnic.

Theatre vets Hannah Waddingham and Sheryl Lee Ralph are dominating the Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for their work in the popular shows Ted Lasso and Abbott Elementary. Across the pond, Waddingham's most recent stage roles include Into the Woods, The Wizard of Oz, and Kiss Me Kate. She also starred in Spamalot on the Main Stem, a role which she carried over from the West End. Ralph originated the role of Deena Jones in Broadway's Dreamgirls, a portrayal which earned her a Tony nomination, and later played Madame Morrible in Wicked.

Other stage vets receiving nominations include Henry Winkler in Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Barry; two-time Olivier winner Brian Cox in Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for Succession; Jodie Comer—who will soon be seen in Broadway's Prima Facie—and five-time Tony nominee Laura Linney for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, for Killing Eve and Ozark, respectively; two-time Tony nominee Mare Winningham in Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie for Dopesick; Toni Collette for The Staircase, Amanda Seyfried for The Dropout, and Sarah Paulson for Impeachment: American Crime Story for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie; and two-time Tony nominee Christopher Walken for Severance and Billy Crudup for The Morning Show for Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. 

The fourth season of Stranger Things, which stars Gaten Matarazzo and Sadie Sink, was nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Matarazzo is set to make his Broadway return in Dear Evan Hansen and Sink's Broadway stint in Annie recently became a hot topic thanks to some viral tweets.

Additional nods include a nomination for three-time Tony nominee Julie Andrews for Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance, who provides the voice for Lady Whistledown in Netflix's Bridgerton.

The star-studded Apple TV+ musical series Schmigadoon!, which was newly renewed for a second seasonswooped many creative categories including nods for Outstanding Production Design For a Narrative Program for Bo Welch, Don Macaulay, and Carol Lavallee; Outstanding Choreography For Scripted Programming for Christopher Gattelli; Outstanding Original Music And Lyrics for Cinco Paul's work on the song "Corn Puddin';" and Outstanding Music Composition for Christopher Willis.

The Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series category saw nominations for Harriet Sansom Harris and Laurie Metcalf for Hacks, and Jane Lynch for Only Murders in the Building; with Colman Domingo for Euphoria for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series and Nathan Lane for Only Murders in the Building in the Outstanding Guest Actor for a Comedy Series. Euphorareceived another nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, a nod shared with co-producer Jeremy O. Harris, the playwright behind Slave Play and Daddy.

Tony winner Sergio Trujillo was nominated for Outstanding Choreography For Variety Or Reality Programming for his work on NBC's Annie Live!, and The Tony Awards Present: Broadway's Back!the concert portion of the 74th Annual Tony Awardswas nominated for Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction for a Variety Special with nods to the designers Noah Mitz, Ed McCarthy, Harry Sandmeister, Richard Beck, and Jason Rudolph.

The 2022 Emmy Awards will handed out September 12 at 8PM ET (check local listings) on NBC, and will stream live for the first time via Peacock.
