Gutenberg! The Musical! finishes its run on January 28. So what better way to commemorate the run than to show the ending of the musical? Set designer Scott Pask shared a video on Instagram of a surprising set change during the show. Check out the clip below, but be warned it contains spoilers for the ending of the musical.
Gutenberg! opened on Broadway October 12, 2023 after beginning previews September 15. The limited engagement will continue through January 28 at the James Earl Jones Theatre on Broadway. Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells star in the new musical, penned by Scott Brown and Anthony King. The show also features
Gutenberg! follows Gad and Rannells as Bud and Doug, two aspiring theatre makers who have written a musical about Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. Convinced their show is ready for Broadway, they are holding a backers' performance in which they play all the parts, aided by hundreds of baseball caps adorned by character names. The show takes place in a rehearsal hall until its very last moments.
Spoiler alert: After Bud and Doug secure funding for their Broadway show (with the help of a "famous Broadway producer" played every night by a celebrity guest), the rehearsal set falls away. In its place is a German-looking town, ostensibly the set for the duo's fully realized Broadway musical. For those who could not make it to this limited-run musical, you can see the ending in the video clip below.
Brown and King were Tony nominated in 2019 for Best Book of a Musical for their work on Beetlejuice. Gutenberg! The Musical! made its premiere Off-Broadway in 2006, which Timbers also directed.
The creative team includes scenic designer Scott Pask, costume designer Emily Rebholz, lighting designer Jeff Croiter, and sound designers M.L. Dogg and Cody Spencer. Music supervision, arrangements, and orchestrations are by T.O. Sterrett, vocal supervision is by Liz Caplan, and music direction is by Marco Paguia. Casting is by C12 Casting. Rachel Sterner serves as production stage manager. Russell Daniels and Sam Hartley are standbys for Bud and Doug.
