Step Into the Light, playing Sept. 21, will feature Aaron Lazar (The Last Ship), Alysha Umphress (On the Town), Analisa Leaming (The King and I) and more. Sperling's Broadway credits also include the current revival of The King and I, Guys and Dolls and The Light in the Piazza, for which he won the Tony Award for Best Orchestrations.
The Sheen Center opening events will run Sept. 14-Oct. 4, with a program that combines film, TV, theatre, music and dance.
The inaugural line-up will also include the New York film premiere of "Captive" starring Golden Globe nominee David Oyelowo ("Selma") and Kate Mara ("House of Cards"); An Evening with Jeannie and Jim Gaffigan, offering a sneak peek of upcoming episodes of the TV Land series "The Jim Gaffigan Show"; a performance by internationally celebrated concert pianist Elaine Kwon; The Amish Project, a one-woman play about the 2006 West Nickel Mines Schoolhouse shooting; and more.
"During these three weeks, we’re thrilled to invite audiences – Catholics and non-Catholics alike – to come and discover The Sheen Center,” stated executive director William Spencer Reilly. "This is an absolute jewel of a space, and our opening slate of events offers a signature mix of civil discourse on important issues, with some of the fastest-rising talent in the visual and performing arts."
The organization will also present a special pre-Mass line-up of talent for Pope Francis’ Papal Mass at Madison Square Garden on Sept. 25, produced by the Archdiocese of New York in association with The Sheen Center. The arts and culture center, equipped with a 274-seat proscenium theatre, is named after the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, best known for his popular radio and TV ministry in the 1950s and 60s.
All events will take place at 18 Bleecker St. The first 100 tickets for each paid event are $10. To purchase tickets and for more information visit SheenCenter or call (212) 925-2812.
