The broadcast of the Free Shakespeare in the Park production will be part of Great Performances' 50th anniversary season.

The Public Theater's summer 2022 production of Richard III, part of the Free Shakespeare in the Park season at Central Park's Delacorte Theater, will air on PBS in spring 2023 as part of the 50th anniversary season of Great Performances. An air date will be announced at a later time.

The Off-Broadway production concluded its run July 17 after beginning previews June 22 and opening June 30. Read reviews for the limited run here.

Danai Gurira starred as Richard III, joined by Wyatt Cirbus as Prince of Wales, Sanjit De Silva as Buckingham, Sam Duncan as Duke of York, Monique Holt as Duchess of York, Gregg Mozgala as King Edward IV and as Richmond, Paul Niebanck as George, Michael Potts as Lord Stanley, Ariel Shafir as Lord Hastings, Heather Alicia Simmsas Queen Elizabeth, Ali Stroker as Anne, Sharon Washington as Queen Margaret, and Daniel J. Watts as Catesby Ratcliffe.

Included in the ensemble were Maleni Chaitoo, Thaddeus Fitzpatrick, Skyler Gallun, Sarah Nina Hayon, Matthew Jeffers, Matt Monaco, Xavier Pacheco, Marcus Raye Pérez, Grace Porter, N'yomi Stewart, and Joe Mucciolo plus understudy Thomas DellaMonica.

Tony nominee Robert O'Hara (Slave Play) directed the production. The creative team also featured scenic designer Myung Hee Cho, costume designer Dede Ayite, lighting designer Alex Jainchill, hair and wig designer Nikiya Mathis, fight directors Teniece Divya Johnson and Jeremy Sample, and movement director Byron Easley. Johnson also serves as intimacy director, Bryan Bauer as production stage manager, and Heather Englander as stage manager. Sound design and composition were by Elisheba Ittloop with Neil Sprouse as director of artistic sign language and Delacorte sound system design by Daniel Lundberg.

The 50th anniversary Great Performances season will also include NY Phil Reopening of David Geffen Hall (November 4 conducted by Jaap van Zweden and featuring soprano Joélle Harvey, mezzo-soprano Kelley O’Connor, tenor Issachah Savage, and bass Davóne Tines, plus a new work by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón), Josh Groban’s Great Big Radio City Show (November 25 with Groban joined by Cyndi Lauper, Denée Benton, and Tiler Peck), Remember This (adapted from the play by Clark Young and Derek Goldman and featuring David Strathairn as World War II Polish resistance fighter Jan Karski) in spring 2023, and a 50th Anniversary Celebration, with details to be announced, also in the spring.
